VideoBreakout

Breakout sessions are available on WBS40.9 and later sites. To find out which version of Webex Meetings that you're using, see Find Your Cisco Webex Meetings Version Number.

Breakout sessions are smaller groups that are split off from the main Webex meeting. They allow a subset of meeting participants to collaborate and share ideas over audio and video. Use breakout sessions for workshops, classrooms, or for when you need a moment to talk privately with a few participants, outside of the main meeting.

Known Issues and Limitations

DIN style (round) Component A/V cable Component video cable for the HD PVR Rocket, Colossus 2 and new model HD PVR 2. Component video and stereo audio cable. Not being able to assign participants to rooms, or even create rooms, ahead of the meeting starting is a massive oversight, in my opinion. Some uses we've been looking forward to using this feature with include internal happy hour events with contractors we hire, where we may have 200 contractors, supporting various projects, that we'd like to move to project, or client, specific rooms. Video breakouts are scheduled video chats that you can plan in your event. Up to 50 participants join a breakout simultaneously using their webcam, with up to 12 participants displayed at a time to a user on the first page of the breakout. Users can then scroll to the next pages to see more participants.

Hosts and cohosts create breakout sessions, assign participants and then, when they're ready, start the sessions.

Attendees can share content and use collaboration tools such as Chat, to collaborate in smaller, more focused discussion groups. See Best Practices for Participating in Breakout Sessions.

Audio and Video in Breakout Sessions

Each breakout session is a separate audio and video conference. If you connected to audio when you joined the meeting, it switches over automatically when you join a breakout session. You can mute or unmute your audio and start or stop your video at any time during the breakout session, just like you would in the main session.

When all breakout sessions end, your audio switches to the main meeting automatically. If your video is on during the breakout session, it remains on when all breakout sessions end and you return to the main meeting.

  • Maximum number of breakout sessions in a meeting: 100

  • The number of participants in a breakout session is limited by the meeting capacity of your plan. For example, for plans that allow 1,000 people, you can have 100 sessions with 10 people in each, 20 sessions with 50 people in each, and so on.

  • Choose to assign participants automatically or manually.

  • Control how and when participants are allowed to return to the main meeting.

If the breakout sessions aren't ended, the attendees' audio is muted when they return to the main meeting. Remind attendees to unmute themselves if they want to speak in the meeting.

Video Breakout Room

Breakout Rooms allow you to split your Zoom meeting into separate rooms (50 maximum). Breakout room participants have full audio, video, and screen sharing capabilities. This feature is ideal for online office hours, where more than one student may join your Zoom session and you need a 'waiting room' for other students while you maintain privacy with another. It is also good for small group collaboration, where everyone can eventually return to the main room and have a larger discussion.

Getting Started:

VideoBreakout

To manage video breakout rooms, you may first need to update Zoom on your computer.

Video Breakout

Creating Video Breakout Rooms:

1. Start a Zoom meeting.

2. Click the Breakout Room option from the menu bar at the bottom of your Zoom screen.

3. Select the number of rooms you would like to create and how you would like to assign your participants to those rooms.

  • Automatically: Let Zoom split your participants up evenly into each of the rooms
  • Manually: Choose which participants you would like in each room

4. Click on Create Breakout Rooms. Your rooms will be created but will not start automatically. Once the rooms are created, you can manage the rooms prior to starting them.
Assigning Participants to Rooms:
To assign participants to your Breakout Rooms, click on Assign next to the room you wish to assign participants to and select the checkbox next to each participant you wish to assign to that room.
Once a participant has been assigned (manually or automatically), the number of participants will show in place of the Assign button.

Participants who are not assigned to a room will remain in the main meeting when the Breakout Rooms are started.

If you would like to make changes to the room assignments, you must do this before starting the Breakout Rooms.
  • Move a participant to another room: Hover over the participant you would like to move. Click on Move to and select a room to move the participant to.

  • Swap participants between rooms: Hover over one of the participants you want to exchange. Click on Exchange and select the other participant you would like to change with.

Managing Breakout Rooms - In Progress:
The host may move between breakout rooms at any point during the meeting. The host can see a list of all participants and which room the participants are assigned to. If a participant has not joined the breakout room yet, it will be noted by '(not joined)' next to their name.
  • Join: Allows the host to join the breakout room selected.
  • Leave: Allows the host to leave the breakout room and return to the main meeting (only shows when in a Breakout Room).
  • Stop All Rooms: Will start a 30 second countdown to end all breakout rooms. This countdown is shown to both the host and participants, and once the countdown is completed, all participants will be returned back to the main meeting.
